Charles is managing director of the Clinkard Group Ltd, based in Middlesbrough and is the third generation of the family to head up the company.
Charles joined Bally shoes UK Ltd. on their trainee management scheme in 1985. This role allowed the opportunity to learn the various areas of managing a retail business including finance and accounts, merchandising, HR, footwear manufacturing, retailing and training and development. He held various management positions in the company and in 1988 was appointed manager of one of Bally’s flagship stores on Oxford Circus.
This experience gave Charles a good grounding for when he was approached by his father for an interview in 1989 to join the family business. He was offered a position as operations manager for the companies seven retail stores and joined the business in November 1989.
Charles was appointed retail director in 1993 and managing director in 2001. Under his leadership the business has grown to twenty eight stores, two factory stores, eight concession stores and a successful online business with the company employing circa 600 people.
He is very results driven and always looking to adopt new ideas and best practices. He networks well within the industry and with other key individuals where he feels mutual benefit can be gained.
Charles has lived and worked in the Teesside area all his life other than his time in London with Bally. He is a trustee at the Darlington Hospice, gets involved in supporting local charities through the company and takes on some challenges himself. In 2017 he was part of the Clinkard team that completed the 20 mile Hadrian’s wall challenge in aid of Centrepoint Sunderland, helping to raise over £5,000.
