After leaving university Daniel was strongly advised by his father not to follow in the family’s footsteps and become the fourth generation of Rubin’s to make shoes. He joined Deloitte & Co. where he qualified as a chartered accountant. After a few years in banking and then as Finance Director of a demolition company he finally succumbed and joined his father’s North London based ladies fashion shoe manufacturing company.
After his father’s death he sold that business to his partner and bought into another ladies shoe manufacturer, London Lane Shoes, where he stayed for 10 years.
In 1986, with the demise of the UK’s fashion footwear manufacturing industry in sight, he sold London Lane and founded Browning Enterprises Ltd, importing fashion footwear, primarily from the Far East. Over the years Browning grew to become one of the largest suppliers of footwear to the retail sector in the UK.
In 1992, he founded Dune, the fashion footwear brand and opened his first store in 1993. The Dune Group has grown over the years to become a leader in affordable luxury fashion footwear and accessories. It now operates out of over 250 stores in more than 20 countries, including flagship stores in London and New York.
